Overall, “PhD Science”, “Master Art” and “PhD Art” experienced increases while the opposite was the case for “First Degree Art”, “First Degree Science” and “Master Science” leveled off. In addition, “PhD Science” was the highest at the end whereas the reverse was true for “First Degree Art”.
Looking first at “Master Science (MS)”, “Master ArArt ( MA)” and “First Degree Science” ( FDS)”, they all accounted for 20% or more in 1990. “MS” was the largest segment at the beginning and stood at 29%, but this figure leveled off at the same proportion in 2010, ranking second instead of first. By contrast, “MA” started at 21%, after which experiencing a slight increase, reached 23% at the end of the period. The opposite change could be seen in “FDS” which dropped markedly from 20% in 1990 to 11% in 2010.
Moving on to the three smaller categories,”First Degree Art (FDA) had a higher proportion than the other two in 1990, which was around 15%. However, this number decreased sharply to only 5% in 2010. In comparison,”PhD Art (PhA)” started at 2% in 1990 and then more than doubled to 5% in 2010. A similar change could be seen in PhD in Science, which rose dramatically from 12% to 30%, overtaking all other groups to become the most common qualification by the end of the period.
