Overall, it’s clear that drama and comedy were the most popular genres both in terms of movie releases and ticket sales in both years. In addition, almost all categories have increased their percentages in ten years, with the exception of romantic relationships.
If you look at the first chart on movie release rates, the drama had the highest percentage, which increased from about 26% in 1996 to 35% in 2006. The share of comedy films also increased from 20% to 25%. The share of fantasy films has increased slightly, from about 12% to 16%. However, the share of romantic films remained at the same level – 7% in 1996 and 2006.
As for cinema ticket sales, comedies were the leader in sales, with their share rising from 20% to 23% in 2006. Sales of dramatic films have changed slightly, from 16% to 17%. Fantasy ticket sales increased from 3% to 7%. On the other hand, romance was the only genre whose sales dropped from 5% in 1996 to just 2% in 2006.
