The first chart compares the proportion of male and female drivers in one European countries in different years, while the second one illustrates the percentage of young individuals within the 17-20 demographic in 1996 and 2006.
Overall, there was a moderate increase in the proportion of drivers among both genders, with male drivers dominating the category over the period. In contrast, drivers aged 17-20 were accounted for the highest share in 1996.
Focusing on male and female drivers, male drivers accounted for 70% in the first two years, significantly higher than females at 30%. This was followed by a further rise to 78%, compared to females at 50% in 1996. After a decade the gap between them nearly shortened by 20%.
As for the youngsters, the rate of male drivers stood at 50% in 1996, before a dramatically decline to approximately 43% in 2006. By contrast, the figure for young female aged 17-20 years made up 30% initially, and this was followed by a sharp drop to 20% at the end of the period.
