By 1980, the number of travels abroad by Frances had stood at nearly 13 million, which was the 3 million higher than the number of visits to France by overseas residents. In the following year both these figure increased significantly, however, the number of visits by overseas French residents higher than the number of journeys to France from foreigners. In 2000, the number of visits to France reached to around 52 million, while the number of visits to France from other countries was about 25 million.
Looking at the second chart, Germany was the most popular destination for French citizens in 2000, with nearly 12million. This was followed by Portugal, which received around 9 million. In addition, the lowest percentages were the countries Monaco and Holland, the former by 3 million and the latter by 3.6 million visitors in 2000.
