The pie charts illustrate how the sources of tourists visiting Australia and Germany changed between 1960 and 2010.
Overall, there was a clear shift towards Asia as a major source of tourists for both countries over the 50-year period. Meanwhile, the proportion of visitors from Europe declined, especially in Australia.
In 1960, Australia received the majority of its tourists from Europe (53%), followed by Britain (25%), while Asia (10%) and the USA (12%) contributed relatively small shares. By 2010, this pattern had changed dramatically, with Asia becoming the dominant source at 63%. In contrast, the shares from Europe and the USA fell to 10% and 7% respectively, while Britain accounted for 20%.
Germany showed a more balanced distribution. In 1960, Europe was the largest contributor at 45%, followed by the USA (25%), Britain (20%), and Asia (10%). By 2010, although Europe remained the largest source (40%), visitors from Asia increased significantly to 25%, and the USA rose slightly to 29%, while Britain dropped sharply to 6%.
