The charts compare changes in people’s preferences for different transport types when commuting to a university for work or study in two years, namely 2004 and 2009.
Overall, while the usage of bus and bicycle increased, the cost of cars declined. The train and walking were the least common modes of transportation for people in both years when going to a university.
At the start of the period, the majority of people used cars for daily transportation (51%), but by the end of the period, this fell dramatically to 28% of the total. The bus and bicycle utilization witnessed significant growth from 33% and 9% to 46% and 16%, respectively. In detail, the figure for train stood at 4% in 2009, which is quite similar to its initial standing. Walking was the least popular mode of travel to university, with 4% in 2004, and this number has risen by 2% in 2009.
