Overall, the most favored genre for men was action, while it was romantic comedy for women. It is also noticeable that the ticket sales of action films constituted the highest proportion compared to other genres.
In detail, action was popular among both genders, attracting 40% of men – the highest figure in the bar chart – and 25% of women in 2010. Meanwhile, a predominant majority of women enjoyed romantic comedy films, standing at 30% six times higher than that of male viewers in this category, with only 5%. The least attractive genre for women was science fiction, with only 5% of women watching this type of film. In addition, both genders showed the same level of interest in comedy (20%) and western (10%).
Regarding the box-office takings in America in 2010, the best- selling type of movie was action, constituting 49% of the composition, followed by comedy with 24%. Although rom-com was the most favored genre by women, it only accounted for 12% of the total ticket sales, significantly lower than that of the action genre-the most popular among men. Thriller and other genres made up the least proportions, which were 12% and 5%, respectively.
