The pie chart illustrates the proportion of volunteers by organizations from 2008 to 2014. Overall, the preponderance of volunteers in healthcare, environmental and especially in sport increased, whereas the opposite trend was observed in Art, educational and “others” category. It is also clear that sport was ranked fifth in 2008, showing a similar percentage to “others” category. It then overtook its counterparts, and became the second-largest in terms of volunteer participation.
The three organizations that followed an upward trend are healthcare, environmental, and sport. Volunteers in sport rose significantly from 15% to 25%. Similarly, the proportion of volunteers in environmental increased, albeit more modestly. The figure increased from 21% to 29%, becoming the largest in the chart. Healthcare increased its proportion by only 1%, having the least volunteers in both years.
The remaining three organizations saw a decline, namely Art, “others” category and especially education. Educational was the highest ranking organization with a percentage of 24% in 2008 but it then fell dramatically to 17% in 2014, making it the third-largest category. Art also decreased by 6 percentage points. The “others” category followed a similar path, decreasing sharply from 15% to 9%.
