Overall, this town has modernized significantly, with the introduction of new facilities, including but not limited to, holiday homes, a golf course, a tennis court, and a yacht marina. These alterations have transformed the once fishing-oriented community into one that is geared toward tourism with a heavy residential focus.
In 1995, Shakefield had more open green space and relied largely on fishing for livelihood. A network of roads connected all major facilities. In the northwest, there were houses along a side road branching off from the main north-south road. To the south of the houses stood sports complexes, followed by a fish market near the coast, where fishing boats were moored at the port. Across from the fish market, on the other side of the main road, there was a coffee shop. A large public park lay in the town centre, east of the housing, between two west-east roads. Two hotels stood to the east of the sports complexes, and farmland occupied the far northeast.
Today, Shakefield boasts many new amenities, especially for recreation. The number of houses in the northwest has increased, while the buildings once used for sports have now been replaced by restaurants. Similar to the sports complex, the fish market was also removed to make way for new apartments. Additionally, the fishing boats have gone, and the sea now has a yacht marina. The coffee shop has been relocated slightly eastward due to a newly built road from the main street. The central part of Shakefield now has holiday homes, where the public park once existed, and the hotels there have been renovated and expanded. Across from these, in the east, there is now a new car park. Finally, a new golf course and a smaller tennis court have been constructed, resulting in the complete disappearance of the old farmland.
