The map shows the expansion of book categories and the upgradation in facilities of a ground-floor library over 8 years from 2001 to 2009.
Overall, the renovation of the library reflected a shift in focus towards accessibility to a greater range of books, especially for children. More facilities were also installed for users’ convenience.
In 2001, the bookshelf area on the left had relatively narrow sources of books, which ranged two features: Self-help and History. However, its upgradation in 2009 expanded it to five ranges (including kitchen, economics and laws books). Moreover, the fiction books, which used to be in the rear, were also relocated to that area. This created space for children’s books and their own reading area nearby. There were also the removal of newspapers and periodicals on the right of the floor, and films and DVDs were installed in its place.
A further noticeable feature is the modifications of facilities. Particularly, there were no longer individual tables in the centre, but an alteration into the larger, longer one. A wide space behind was also ultilized the computers’ installation. However, the librarian’s desk directly opposite the entrance and the stairs nearby and the nearby stairs, remained the same after 8 years.
