This scheme depicts the salmon’s cycle of life, includes various stages of growing and locations needed for the fish to develop.
The cycle starts in the upper part of the river, where the current is not strong. Slamon roe, hidden among small stones in the reeds, takes from five to six month to develop, on average. As a result, a relatively small fish, called a “fry” is formed. The size varies from 3 to 5 cm. The “fries” then move to the lower part of the river, where they stay for up to 4 years, transforming into a new form – a “smolx”.
To continue the cycle, 12 to 15 cm “smolxes” swim to the open sea, where they are going to live and grow for the next 5 years. In 5 years an adult salmon could reach up to 70-76 cm in size. Once the fish are fully grown, they travel against the current back to their place of birth, lead by their instincts to lay eggs and breed. Overall, the life cycle of salmon is an increadibly complicated process that inclused 3 stages of developement, and starts and finishes in the same place.
