The two pie charts compare the energy usage in an average Australian household and the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions produced by each category.
Overall, heating and water heating consume the most energy in Australian homes. However, the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions is water heating, followed by other appliances.
Heating and water heating account for 42% and 30% of total energy use, respectively. Other appliances make up 15%, which is more than twice as much as refrigeration (7%). Meanwhile, lighting and cooling use the least energy, at 4% and 2%, respectively.
When it comes to greenhouse gas emissions, water heating is the largest contributor at 32%, while other appliances come second at 28%. Heating contributes around 15%, and refrigeration is responsible for 14% of the emissions. Lighting and cooling have the smallest shares, at 8% and 3%, respectively.
