Car usage increased sharply to over 35%, making it the most popular mode of transport for commuting. In contrast, use of the bicycles rose slightly between 1960 and 1980, however, then it dropped gradually to over 5%. Walking used to be the most popular way to commute in 1960, but its popularity declined significantly from more than 35% in 1960 to around 9% in 2000.
