The chart illustrates the frequency of Australian male and female genders getting access to social media platforms from 2011 to 2014.
Overall, both men and women became actively engaged in social media over a three- year period, with the most noticeable shift in daily usage, while the proportion of people who never used social media declined in both groups. In addition, women used social media more frequently than their counterparts in both years.
In 2011, the percentage of women who used social media once a week started at 40%, compared to only 12% of men. By 2014, these figures witnessed a dramatic decline, with respective figures of a mere 10% for female citizens and 9 % for male ones. Conversely, the share of daily usage in both genders changed significantly, increasing from 30% in 2011 to 59% in 2024 among women and from 25% to 45% among men.
In terms of the remaining categories, 44% of men never got access to social media in the initial year, with a subsequent fall to 30% in 2014, while the figure for female users experienced an opposite trend, rising from 8% in 2011 to 22% by the end of the period. Similar changes can be seen in the figure for social media access few times a week, in which the share of the men decreased slightly from 19% to 16% and women using social media dropped marginally to 9%.
