The line chart illustrates the figure for the number of public transit travels among four Australian urban areas from 1900 to 2010.
In general, trips on community vehicles in all cities witnessed decline after reaching their peak in 1950. Additionally, while the figure for Sydney, Adelaide and Hobart started operating in 1900, the usage of public transportation in Canberra only came into operation until 1920.
Between 1900 and 1920, whereas people from Canberra still did not use public vehicles, the number of journeys made by community transit in Sydney went up substantially from 240 to 470 trips, before experiencing a downturn to 370 trips in the next 10 years. By 1950, the figure for both areas reached their peak, at precisely 470 journeys for Sydney and 200 journeys for Canberra. In the remaining years, the average number of community transportation in Sydney plummeted to 150 trips. In contrast, the usage of public vehicles in Canberra fluctuated slightly before ending at 80 trips, which was the second highest in 2010.
Moving to the figure for Adelaide and Hobart, both cities underwent significant fluctuation before reaching the highest point in 1950 with approximately 430 trips in Hobart and 370 trips in Adelaide. Following the same pattern to Sydney, the usage of public transportation in Adelaide and Hobart plunged respectively to 50 journeys and less than 50 journeys per person at the end of the period. Notably, the figure for Hobart which became the second highest in 1950 reached the bottom after 60 years.
