The bar chart illustrates the proportion of leisure time preferences of Canadian adolescent girls and boys across four categories- sports, computer games, music and shopping.
Overall, there are clear gender disparities in the leisure activities among teenagers. Shopping is a predominantly favored recreational activity among boys; in stark contrast it has the least popularity among girls.
Interestingly, shopping dominates as the top chosen relaxing task among boys, recording nearly 35 percent, while only a small proportion (6 percent) of girls are interested in shopping. A similar trend is evident in the sports category too. The proportion of boys who prefer sports is more than double that of their female counterparts, representing 26 percent and 12 percent respectively.
Music has almost the same popularity among teenagers regardless their gender differences; making up to 19 percent each for boys and girls. Despite being the second most popular leisure time activity among Canadian girls (13 percent), computer games are the least favored recreational activity among boys at 17 percent, slightly higher than the girls’ proportion.
