Overall, all the proportion of Chinese population witnessed an increase except for the number of people who are aged at 0 – 14. Furthermore, the population of China expected a growth in aging population.
In 1960, the percentage of the 0 – 14, 15 – 64, and 65+ age groups stood at 45%, 38% and 5%, respectively. Over the next 60 years, the 65+ age group witnessed a gradual increase of 15%, while population aging at 15 – 64 saw a significant growth and has reached a peak at 70% in 2020. In contrast, a considerable decrease of 15% was seen in the number of 0 – 14 age group in the same given period.
Looking at the estimating Chinese population from 2020 to 2050, the proportion of the people aging at 65+ will continue to increase significant to nearly 30%, whereas the two remaining figures predict a similar downward trend, with 0 – 14 age group surpassing 13% and 15 – 64 age group over 15%. During the same time frame, there is a steady rise in the number of 65+ age group.
