The bar chart illustrates activities that children in different age groups do before going to bed in the United States.
Overall, while reading is the most common activity during bedtime among all children, watching TV and eating are the least popular. In addition, the amount of time spent on reading, bathing and eating declines, whereas the time for brushing teeth and watching TV rises.
Regarding popular activities, reading is the dominant one across all three age groups, making up 70% for the 4-5 years age group and around 60% for the other two categories. Children tend to brush their teeth before sleeping when growing up, accounting for 50% in the 6-8 age group, compared to over 40% in 4-5 year olds and 30% in 1-3 year olds. Opposite pattern can be seen in the figure for taking a bath. 40% of children aged 1-3 years have this routine before bedtime and decreases by between 3% and 4% as age increases.
In terms of less prevalent bedtime routines, watching TV is more common among children aged between 4 and 5 years old, at 20%, compared to approximately 15% of the other age groups. Meanwhile, 20% of children aged 1-3 years eat before going to sleep, doubling the figures for the other age categories.
