The bar chart shows different bedtime routines for three age groups of American children. Overall, the majority of children of all ages are in favor of reading books before going to bed, while the least favorable activity is eating in all age categories with the exception of children aged 1-3. The general pattern is moving from unhealthy habits to doing more hygiene activities among offspring as they get older.
Regarding more healthy activities, reading is the most common activity particularly among children aged 4 to 5 with 70%. This is followed by those who are 1-3 years and 6-8 years old, engaging in this activity at about 65% and 60% respectively. Brushing teeth is the second most-favored activity in all age categories with the oldest and the youngest age groups having the highest and the lowest proportions with respective figures 50% and 30%. In contrast, taking a shower is more common among toddlers than children aged 6-8 and 4-5, with 40%.
Turning to the remaining habits, 20% of children who are 4-5 years old engage in watching before going to sleep, which was significantly higher than that of their counterparts, whose figures were nearly the same at around 15%. In addition, 20% of toddlers make eating a habit prior to going to bed, which was the same as that of children aged 4-5 years. These figures for the rest of the age groups were quite lower, with about 10% for each one.
