The line chart shows the percentage of the population in Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia living in cities in the years between 1970 and 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
In general, it is clear that the percentages of citizens of Malaysia and Indonesia increased, while Philippines and Thailand witnessed a nominal fluctuation.
The proportion of citizens in Malaysia in 1970 was 30 percent, after 10 years it grew by 10 percent. Cities endorsed another 5 percent of population of rural area, so in 1990 the percentage of city population was about 45 percent. In the next decade it witnessed the most significant growth and made it up to 60 percent. By the year of 2010 the allocation of urban population increased to 70 percent and in the following 30 years it is expected to grow by 5-6 percent in each decade. When it comes to the Indonesia – it was one of least urbanized countries with the total percentage of 12 percent in 1970, thus the growth was a bit unexpected too, because by 1980 it witnessed just 2-3 percent of growth. Meanwhile, in the next 10 years people will move into the city and their percentage will be 25%, but after 10 years there will be the same changes, like it was 20 years ago. When it comes to the upcoming 20 years it is expected to increase by almost 10 percent in each decade.
The figures of Philippines and Indonesia in the year of 1970 were 32% and 18%, respectively. By the next decade both countries showed an increase in the proportion of city dwellers by almost 10%. However, starting from the year of 1990 the figure for Philippines witnessed a drop and it continued till the year of 2010, when the amount of city population was about 40%. Meanwhile, the proportion of urban people in Thailand was stable during this period of time. Right after this, both countries showed a growth to 43% and 30% in the year of 2020. There is an expectation of rice in the percentage of city residents by 5-10% in each decade in the figure of both countries.
