Overall, it can be seen that there is a significant increase in the percentage of individuals living in the cities for all 4 countries and this is expected not to stop in the future. Malaysia appears to be the frontrunner with the highest proportion of city residents compared to the others.
Firstly, in 1970, around 30% Malaysia’s and Philippines’ population lived in the cities. By 2020, Malaysia made an outstanding growth, reaching almost 80% city population, while the Philippines had fluctuated between 30 to 50 percent.
Secondly, Thailand had nearly 20% of its population living in the cities in 1970 whereas Indonesia had about 15%. However, by 2020, Indonesia had increased dramatically and its proportion has surpassed 50%, while Thailand’s only reach around 40%.Looking ahead, there will be a significant increase across 4 countries. By 2040, it is predicted that Malaysia will be the country having the biggest proportion of city dwellers, around 80%. Following that, Indonesia makes it to the second, with nearly 60%. The predicted figures for Thailand and Philippines are approximately 50% and 55%, respectively.
