It is evident that Malaysia had the largest proportion of population living in cities throughout most of the given period. Conversely, Thailand is predicted to have the lowest level of urban citizents by 2040.
Looking at the chart in more detail, it it noticeable that in 1970 the Philippines had the most percentage of citizens, at about 32%. Similarly, Malaysia urban residents accounted for 30% of its total population. By 1980, figure for Malaysia surpassed that of the Philippines and stood at about 40% and 35%, respectively. Although in 1990 the proportion of citizens of the Philippines was moderately higher than that of Malaysia, figures for the latter exceeded the percentage of the Philippines and rose dramatically to about 75% in 2020. Its figure is expected to reach a peak at over 80% by 2040.
In 1970, the Thai and the Indonesian urban residents made up nearly 19% and 14% on the total population, respectively. Figure for Indonesia surpassed that of Thailand in 2000, at 30%. In a similar way, its percentage also exceeded the percentage of the Philipinnes in 2010, at around 45%. It is projected to peak at above 60% by 2040.
