The graph above illustrates the information about the population in four Asian countries living in cities from 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040 in percentage.
Overall, all of the countries’ populations have increased from 1970 to 2020. In 1970, Indonesia ranked the lowest, with less than 15% of the population living in cities. Contrastly, the Philippines, ranked first with an amount around 32%. The second country with the highest number of citizens in cities is Indonesia’s neighboring country, Malaysia, amounting up to exactly 30% of its population a few decades ago. Following it in third was Thailand with around 19%.
However, these ranks developed drastically by 2020. Overtaking the previous lead was Malaysia, increasing around 43% of its original sum from 1970. The Philippines in 2020, however, received a slight decline from its spike in 1990, totaling up to more or less 45% in the end. Additionally, Thailand too did not have much of a rise. From 19%, Thailand numbered to 30% 50 years later. Indonesia had the most change, rising up from less than 15% to 50% in 2020, placing it in second place. This rapid increase in populations contributed to the predictions made for 2030 and 2040. Ranks remained the same as 2020, with Philippines predicted at 80%, Indonesia at 60%, Malaysia at 50%, and lastly, Thailand at more than 40% by the end of 2040.
