Overall, there is a rising trend for figures for the population living in cities in four Asian nations, with the biggest change shown in the proportion of Malaysia.
In 1970, Philippines contained the highest percentage of citizens of approximately 30%, which was slightly above Malaysia. The lowest figures were for Indonesia, which was roughly 12%.
From 1970 onwards, the proportion of Malaysia rose significantly by around 45% over the 50-year period,reaching about 75% which was the highest figure by 2020. It was predicted to continuously increase and remain the highest from 2020 to 2040. For Indonesia, the percentage also increased markedly from 1970 to 2020 and was predicted to rise over the following 20 years. The percentage of Philippines and Thailand also showed a rising trend yet less noticeable than that of Indonesia and Malaysia. The lowest figures for the population of citizens shifted from Indonesia in 1970 to Thailand in 2020 and by 2040.
