The line chart illustrates the price of bananas across four countries, namely Japan, France, Germany, and the USA, over an 11-year period from 1994 to 2004.
Overall, banana prices in Japan and the USA experienced an upward trend over the period, despite differing rates of growth and volatility. Conversely, net decreases were recorded in France and Germany. Notably, Japan emerged as the country with the highest banana prices for almost the entire duration, with the sole exception of 2001.
In 1994, Japan started at approximately $1.90 per kilogram. This figure experienced a dramatic surge to a peak of $2.80 in 1995, followed by a sharp correction back to $2.00 in 1996. After hitting its lowest point of $1.50 in 2001, the Japanese price rallied strongly to finish the period at $2.50. The USA, by contrast, commenced at the lowest position of $0.75. It then climbed to $1.20 in 1995, fluctuated marginally around $1.00 until 1998, and remained perfectly stagnant at $1.10 from 1999 through to 2004.
Regarding the remaining nations, France began at $1.70 in 1994 and maintained this price for four consecutive years. Following a brief peak at $1.80 in 1999 and a significant plunge to a low of $1.00 in 2003, French banana prices recovered to $1.50 by the end of the timeline. Meanwhile, Germany’s prices exhibited a fluctuating downward trajectory: starting at $1.40, the figure plateaued at $1.50 during 1996-1997 before gradually declining to finish at a stable $1.20 in the final years.
