The bar chart shows changes in the percentage of unemployed women in four different parts of the UK in two separate years: 2013 and 2014.
Overall, the female unemployment rate declined in three out four nations, with Northern Ireland experiencing the most marked decrease, while the reverse was true for only Scotland. It is also clear that although England initially had the highest rate of jobless women, it was surpassed by Scotland by the end of the period in study.
Focusing on downward trends first, a staggering 6.8% of women in England were out of work in 2013, a figure that then fell marginally to 6.5% in the following year. Similarly, Wales’ female unemployment rate witnessed a slight decline to exactly 5.0% in 2014, down from an initial 5.4%, whereas Northern Ireland saw the most significant decrease of 1.0 percentage point, from 5.6% in 2013 to a chart-low of 4.6% in 2014.
Scotland, on the other hand, was an outlier, as it was the only country to be on the upward trajectory. Starting with 6.1%, the share of unemployed females in this area rose, reaching 6.7% in 2014 and thus climbing to the top position by the end of the period.
