The chart provides information about the employment of first-year English and French teachers in Ontario between 2001 and 2007.
In 2001, the percentage of English (blue-diamond line) and French (red-square line) teachers recruited was around 70 percent. This is followed by a plummet in 2002 of about 15 percent. From this point on, the numbers begin to diverge. Specifically, the red line skyrocketed in 2003, and the initial percentage has almost recovered. Then a moderate increase followed until 2005, when the number of hired French teachers was 70 percent. In 2006, a dip took place, but it was soon reversed by 2007, and rebounded to 75 per cent.
On the other hand, the blue line had been decreasing until it reached a bottom in 2003, when the number of newly hired English teachers was about 40 percent. Subsequently, a marginal increase is observed until 2005. Nevertheless, the percentage returned to its initial downward trend in 2006. By 2007, the blue line reached its lowest value (at around 28 per cent).
In summary, both curves depict the same initial behaviour. However, from 2022 onward, both trends diverge. While the red curve showed an upward trend overall, the blue one revealed the opposite.
