The line chart illustrates the amount of US dollars, in millions, which were used to purchase books in four countries of Europe, from 1995 to 2005.
Overall, book sales increased in all fours nations. Germany spent the most amount of money on books throughout the period. Austrian people started of as the lowest purchaser of books, although they overtook the Italians to get third place in 2005.
From 1995 to 1999, book sales rose in Germany to 90 million USD, but afterwards it dropped to less than 85 million USD in 2003. It then showed a rapid rise to end the period at approximately 95 million USD. France consistently stayed at 2nd place, showing a gradual surge in the sales of books to around 70 million USD in 2001, and again to 75 million USD in 2005.
Italy had a sharp increase in sales to just over 55 million USD in 1997, although this dipped to less than 50 million USD in 1999. This amount moderately rose again, ending the period at a new peak of over 60 million USD. Austria started at just under 30 million USD, increasing sales slowly to 40 million USD in 2001. This, however, changed afterwards as sales soared sharply, overtaking Italy just between 2001 and 2003, and finally rising to just over 70 million USD at the end.
