The graph illustrates the average number of hours spent on several daily activites in the UK between 1985 and 2023.
Overall, people spent most of their time on working or studying, while they spend the least hours on eating and drinking over the time period. The average time for working and studying, leisure and sports, and household chores has decreased, whereas that for using media and eating and drinking has increased.
Notably, in 1985, people used to spend more than 8 hours in working or studying, which declined over the years and reached to less than 8 hours in 2000. It further dropped in 2015, but soon after that, it slightly increased. Likewise, hours allocated for leisure and sports was less than 4 hours in 1985, which rose to almost 4 hours in 2000, and declined steadily afterwards, culminating to 3.2 hours in 2023. Household chores showed a smiliar trend, starting from less than 3 hours in 1985, and eventually fell down to 2.5 hours at the end of the period.
In contrast, using media has reported a steady growth in hours distribution, which commenced at 2.4 hours in 1985, and rose to 4.6 hours in 2015. It further grew and culminated at 5.5 hours by 2023. Similarly, eating and drinking also showed an incline, which is very subtle.
