The bar chart illustrates the number of teaching hours per year completed by teachers in Japan, Spain, Ireland, and the USA in 2001.
Overall, teachers in the USA spent the most time teaching across all three educational levels. By contrast, Japan recorded the lowest figures overall. Primary school teaching hours were identical in Japan, Spain, and Ireland, while the figures for secondary education varied considerably among the four countries.
In Japan and Spain, teachers at both primary and lower secondary levels worked 600 hours annually. However, a significant difference can be seen in upper secondary education, where Spanish teachers taught approximately 950 hours, compared to around 650 hours in Japan.
Similarly, primary school teachers in Ireland also taught 600 hours per year. The figures for lower secondary and upper secondary education were higher, at about 800 and 780 hours respectively.
The USA had by far the highest teaching hours. Primary teachers taught roughly 900 hours annually, while those in lower secondary and upper secondary education recorded approximately 1,050 and 1,100 hours respectively.
