At the start of the period, the coast was the most popular destination for overseas visitors. Lakes were the most popular in the middle of the period, but by the end, the coast was the most popular.
With regard to the coast, it began at around 40,000 visitors and then peaked at 50,000 visitors in 1997 before growing dramatically to about 75,000 visitors in the last year. Likewise, the number of visitors to the mountains started at approximately 20,000 and then remained unchanged (20,000) in 1997 before increasing to about 35,000 visitors in the last year.
On the other hand, the number of visitors to the lakes increased over the period. It began at 10,000 visitors and then peaked at 40,000 visitors in 1997 before rising dramatically to about 75,000 visitors, but then fell to about 50,000 visitors in the last year.
