Overall, the most common reason to visit japan was for business, on the other hand visiting japan for holidays is the second common reason but it showed fluctuated pattern throughout the period, while visiting friends was consistently the lowest reason to visit japan.

To begin, in 1990 business visitors recorded at above 6 million, and kept increaing till it reached the peaked in 2000 with almost 10 million visitors, however, in 2005 it significanly fell to reach less than 8 million, but recovered in the end of the span to reach 8.5 million. on the other hand, visiting for holidays kept changing to fell and rise from almost 6 million in the begining to 6.5 at the end.
