The line charts compare the number of people living in cities in 4 different countries in southeast asia between 1970 and 2020 and the prediction for 2030 and 2040. Overall, all of the countries display a continuous upward trajectory and the percentage of people living in cities in Malaysia is projected to be the highest.
Initially, approximately 31% of the population in the Philippines was living in the cities, compared to Malaysia which was lower by a narrow margin of 1 percent at 30%. The figure for people living in cities in Thailand and Indonesia was at around 20% and 15%, respectively. The number of people living in the cities in 4 countries rose significantly throughout the 30 year period and in 2000, 6 out of 10 people in Malaysia were living in cities, while only roughly 45% Filipino living in cities.
At the same time, the population living in cities in Thailand and Indonesia was approximately 30%. The number of people living in cities kept growing and around two-fifths of Filipinos and Indonesians lived in cities in 2010, compared with Malaysian and Thai at 70% and 30% respectively. The figure for people living in cities is expected to keep rising and reach a peak of around 85% in Malaysia, 62% in Indonesia, 55% in Philippines, and 49% in Thailand.
