The bar chart illustrates the percentage of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 compared with the overall unemployment rate in five European countries in 2005. Overall, youth unemployment was significantly higher than the general unemployment rate in all countries. Poland recorded the highest figures, whereas Denmark had the lowest.
Poland had the greatest proportion of unemployed young people, at roughly 37%. This was followed by Italy at about 23% and Hungary at around 17%. In comparison, the overall unemployment rate in Poland was 15%, which was more than twice the figures for Italy and Hungary, both standing at around 6-7%.
In Germany, approximately 14% of young people were out of work, compared with around 7% in Denmark. As for overall unemployment, Germany recorded a rate of 10%, while Denmark had the lowest figure among the five countries, at just 3%.
