The line graph illustrates the changes in the population of a particular country across three age groups from 1960 to projections in 2040.
Overall, the “15-64” group shared the largest proportion in total, despite witnessing a steady decrease trend starting in 2000. The percentage of the “65+”group followed a consistent upward trend and continuously climbed to the second position after 1990, whereas at the same time the age between 0 and 14 remained the lowest group.
From 1960 to 2000, the age group between 15 and 64 ranked first in the proportion of population ranging between 50% and 60%. At the beginning of the period, the “0-14” group was in second place with 30%, which was double the figure for the age 65+ , only approximately 15%. However, while the “65+” group gradually increased over the period from 15% in 1960 to 25% in 2000, the rate for population of 0-14 underwent a significant decrease and became the lowest group in 2000 at around 15%.
From 2000 to 2020, the percentage of the population from 15 to 64 still remained as the largest share with between 50% and 60%, but the future prediction shows a slight drop to only 45% in 2040. The age group of 65+ progressively rose to 25% in 2020 and is forecast to have the same figure as the “15-64” group in 2040, at 45%. In contrast, the share of population in 0-14 years old still accounted for around 10%, and will decrease to only 10% in the future.
