In the early years, the USA had the largest proportion of elderly citizens, followed by Sweden and then Japan. Both the USA and Sweden saw a gradual increase over the first few decades, whereas Japan remained relatively low and even declined slightly during the same time.
However, from the early 2000s onwards, the trends changed significantly. All three countries began to experience sharp growth in the elderly population. Japan’s increase is especially notable, as it is expected to surpass both Sweden and the USA towards the end of the period, despite starting from the lowest point.
