The bar chart illustrates information about quantities of transported goods in the United Kingdom from 1974 to 2022 by road, water, rail, and pipeline.
Overall, the value of all types of transport which carried goods increased during the given period, with exception of rail, which remained at the same level in the end.
In 1974, transportation of goods by road was in the first place among other types. In the beginning, it started with 70 million tones of goods transported. It then gradually increased to almost 98 million tones with small dips between 1978 and 1982, and 1992-1995. The value of transportation by water was stable at 40 million tones from 1974 to 1978, before increasing by almost 20 million tones in 1982. This number was also stable with small dip in 1998, and increased to 63 million tones approximately in 2002.
Rail type of transportation started at 40 million tones as the water type. This number gradually decreased by 10 million tones in 1985. Then it is seen that this number increased slightly, but in 1994 it dropped to the level of 1985 year again. However, in the end it reached 40 million tones like on the outset.
Pipelines were used less for transportation in the beginning. However, its value increased steadily to just above 20 million tones in 1995. Then it remained stable until the end.
