The line graph demonstrates atmospheric pollutants measured in millions of tonnes in the United Kingdom between 1990 and 2005.
Overall, there was a downward trend in total air pollutant emissions over the period. While the pollution from industry and households steadily decreased, those forms of the Transport sector grew slightly.
In 1990, the total emissions hit their peak at around 7.8 million tonnes. However, industry was the biggest contributor , producing almost 5.5 million tonnes of pollution, while transport and households emitted approximately 1 million tonnes. From 1993 to 1999, households remained unchanged and industry dropped to about 4 million tonnes, whereas the transport sector experienced a jump in 1993 then slowly fell to 1.3 million by 1999.
In contrast, emissions from industry and households had declined to around 2 million tonnes and 0.8 million tonnes respectively by 2002. Moreover, the transport sector, from 1999 and 2002 showed a sharp rise, reaching 2.5 million tonnes. In 2005 the total number of air pollutants dropped to 5 millions, where the households displayed the lowest point and the most dominant was transport with 2.7 million tonnes.
