Overall,spending on books increased in all four countries over the period. Germany had the highest expenditure throughout, while Austria experienced the most significant growth. In contrast, Italy’s and France’s spending rose more steadily.
In 1995, Germany spent around 80 million on books, far more than the other countries. France and Italy followed with approximately55 million and 50 million respectively, while Austria had the lowest figure at30 million.
Between 1995 and 1999, spending in France and Germany rose gradually. Germany peaked at around 90 million in 1999 before dipping slightly to about78 million by 2003. However, it recovered and reached a high of 95 million in 2005. France’s expenditure increased steadily throughout the period, finishing at about75 million.
Italy’s trend was more erratic. It fell slightly to 50 million in 1999, then rose gradually to60 million by 2005. Austria, which started at the lowest point, showed consistent growth and overtook Italy in 2003. By 2005, Austria’s spending had reached around $72 million.
