The line graph illustrates a timeline of the number of 13-year-old students that selected each language option, which is French or Mandarin, in a school in England.
Overall, there are two clear trends presented in the graph. Although Mandarin started with near zero student that chose this option, it consistently gained popularity throughout the year till present whereas French used to almost be the only option chosen plummet to only a half of the student it had when it started.
Firstly, French’s number of student were significantly higher than Mandarin in the year 2000 but after 5 years, it dropped considerably to a relatively low of 90 students. From this point, the number began to stablize which it rises slightly to 100 in 2006 before continuing to slightly fall each year till now.
In contrast, Mandarin used to be almost non-existant with only under 10 students chose to study it in the year 2000. But, the language immediately gained tractions afterward and began to soar to just under 80 almost equals to French’s number after 5 years. After 2006, the number fluctuated slightly each year, mostly increase, it ends up at the same to the year 2006, under 80. The Mandarin’s line shows that its relationship with French is the complete opposite.
