The line graph shows the number of UK adolescents following a vegetarian diet between 1980 and 2020.
Overall, the figure fluctuated slightly for most of the period before rising sharply after 2015, reaching its highest level by 2020.
In 1980, approximately 2 million adolescents followed a vegetarian diet. This number increased gradually to around 2.5 million in the mid-1980s, before experiencing minor fluctuations and remaining relatively stable at just above 2 million until the mid-1990s.
From 1995 to 2000, the number rose more noticeably, peaking at nearly 4 million. However, this was followed by a decline, with the figure dropping to about 2 million by 2010.
After a short period of stability, the number increased dramatically from 2015 onwards. By 2020, it had surged to roughly 9 million, representing the most significant growth in the entire period.
