In the early 1980s, the number of visitors to the museums (excluding the Louvre Museum) was roughly the same. After 1985, the number of visitors to the Vatican Museums began to rise significantly. By 2015 there were two main groups of museums: one with high visitor numbers (Louvre and Vatican Museums) and one with lower attendance (London Science Museum and Shenzhen Museum).
From 1980 to 2015 there was a noticeable increase in the number of visitors to the Vatican Museums. The number increased from 5 million to around 9 million. Attendance at the Louvre also slightly increased. The figure rose from 8 million to 9.5 million. In contrast, the other two museums have a much lower attendance throughout the period. The number of visitors to the London Science Museum decreased from 4 million to 2 million, while the Shenzhen Museum’s attendance stayed roughly constant at about 4 million visitors.
Between 1980 and 2015, visitor numbers increased significantly at the Vatican Museums and the Louvre, while the London Science Museum experienced a sharp decline. Meanwhile, attendance at the Shenzhen Museum remained stable.
