Both Denmark and Germany witnessed a dramatic fall of energy produced from coal. In 1995, their exports stood at 60% and just below, respectively. There was a sudden plunge to 10% of energy produced in Denmark, which was the lowest of that year. Germany followed a similar pattern, hitting a low of around 5% in 2007 and though unlike Denmark, increasing to approximately 18% at the end of the period.
In contrast, despite some slight fluctuations, energy production in Sweden and France fell more moderately over the period. 35% of energy came from Sweden in 1995, and this proportion declined gradually to finish at about 28% in the following 15 years, the highest of all four European countries, while the percentage produced in France remained just under that of Sweden over the whole period.
