The line graph illustrates the amount of goods transported jn the United Kingdom by road, water, rail and pipeline between 1974 and 2002. The scale is in million tonnes
Overall, it can be seen that majority of conveying is carried out by roadways and least transit is done through pipeline.
To begin with, by comparing road transport with pipeline it is evident that in 1974 the deliveries carried out by road and pipeline was nearly 70 and 5 million tonnes. However, in 1982 pipeline transportation shot up by approximately 22 million tonnes and by the year 1994 it was stable over the period 20 million tonnes. On the other hand, road transportation showed fluctuation over the years but by 2002 it sharply increased and reached nearly 100 million tonnes.
Furthermore, the usage of water and rail for transportation in 1978 was the same 40 million tonnes but water deliveries rose by around 65 million tonnes in 1982 and remained the same over a decade and by 2002 it was above 60 million tonnes. Whereas, rail transit fluctuated in the respective years and by 2002 it was 40 million tonnes.
