The line graph and the bar chart illustrate the number of vehicles and the amount of CO2 emissions in England and Wales from 2000 to 2020, measured in millions and tonnes.
Overall, both the number of vehicles and CO2 emissions increased over the period. Cars were consistently the largest contributor to emissions, and the rise in vehicle numbers appears to be associated with higher emission levels.
In 2000, the number of vehicles stood at approximately 20 million. This figure rose steadily to around 35 million in 2010, before increasing more sharply to about 60 million by 2020.
Regarding CO2 emissions, cars produser by far the highest levels throughout the period, rising from about 2.3 tonnes in 2000 to around 3 tonnes in 2020. Truck emissions also increased significantly from roughly 0.7 to 1.3 tonnes. By contrast, emissions from buses and vans were considerably lower. Buses rose slightly from around 0.3 to 0.5 tonnes, while vans increased from approximately 0.5 to 0.6 tonnes.
