Overall, people aged 34-54 accounted for the largest proportion of visitors in the both of years, although their share declined considerably over the period. By contrast, the percentages of younger adults and older tourists increased, while proportion of those aged 25-34 fell.
In 1983, visitors aged 34-54 made up exactly 50% of all UK tourists to Spain, make this by far the largest age group. The 25-34 category ranked second at 20%, followed by those aged 55 and over at 16%. Children aged 0-15 represented 10%, whereas the 16-24 group accounted for only 4%, the smallest proportion.
In 2003, the percentage of 34-54 year-olds had fallen significantly to 35%, although they still remained the latest group. Meanwhile, the share of visitors aged 55 and over rose markedly from 16% to 26%, making them the second largest category. The proportion of 16-24 year-olds also increased substantially from 4% to 15%, while the figure for children edged up slightly to 12%, In contrast, the percentage of visitors aged 25-34 decreased from 20% to 12%.
