The line graphs illustrate the percentage of the Australian population attending cinemas and the total amount of money spent on cinema tickets between 1980 and 2015.
Overall, both cinema attendance and spending on tickets increased throughout the period, with a more noticeable rise in the amount of money spent.
In 1980, around 35% of the Australian population attended cinemas. This figure increased gradually over the next two decades, reaching approximately 55% by 2000. Although there was a slight dip shortly after, the percentage continued to rise overall, peaking at just above 70% in the early 2010s before experiencing a small decline towards 2015.
The amount of money spent on cinema tickets also followed an upward trend. It started at around 200 AUD in 1980 and rose steadily until the early 2000. Between 2005 and 2015, spending increased more sharply, reaching over 1,200 AUD by the end of the period, showing the most dramatic growth during the last decade.
