The image consists of two graphs; the first one is a line graph titled "Value changes in UK steel industry 1970-2000" showing three lines for Total UK demand (starts at 150000 in 1970, decreases to just below 100000 in 1980, further down to just above 50000 in 1990, and ends just below 50000 in 2000), UK production (starts at 100000 in 1970, decreases to just above 50000 in 1980, slightly increases to 60000 in 1990, and ends just above 50000 in 2000), and Import (starts just below 50000 in 1970, slightly increases to 60000 in 1980, decreases below 50000 in 1990, and ends just above 50000 in 2000). The second graph is a bar chart titled "Employment status in UK steel industry" showing a single declining bar starting at 500000 in 1970, decreasing to above 300000 in 1980, further down to above 100000 in 1990, and ending just below 100000 in 2000.

The charts detail value changes in the steel industry and the number of workers employed in the UK between 1970 and 2000.
From an overall perspective, it is readily apparent the number import of steel increased, while the opposite was true for the total demand and production of steel. In addition the total UK production declined the most over the period surveyed.
As can be seen from the first line graph, in 1970, the total UK demand for steel stood out as the highest at 200,000 million tonnes. It is followed by that of UK production for steel and import with the total of nearly 170,000 and 10,000 million tonnes respectively. Over a 30-year period, both total steel demand and production experienced a plunge and finishing at 100,000 million tonnes for the steel demand and approximately 80,000 million tonnes for the UK steel production. Meanwhile, the year of 2000 saw a steadly rise in the total of import values at about 75,000 million tonnes, slightly lower than the production of steel.
With regard to the second line graph, in 1970, 50,000 people were employed in the steel industry, but there was a significant decline of under 20,000 workers in the final year.
