The given chart depicts the genealogical transformation of five Romance languages from their Latin roots.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that all five Romance languages as we know them today originate from the counterpart of Classical Latin –Vulgar Latin in ancient times.
From the opposite end of Sardinian, Romanian is the only language derived from the Eastern family of the Continental Romance Languages. Because of the absence of another mother tongue connected in the Dalmatian line, the official language of Romania stands uniquely under Proto-Romanian ancestry, making it the most widely used language in the Balkan region.
Interestingly, the linguistic bloodline under the Italo-Western umbrella displays a more complex connection. Portuguese and Spanish, for example, root from the same evolutionary path, being the native tongues spoken in the Iberian Peninsula. Descending from the same Western lineage, French stems solely from the Gallo-Romance vernacular. Italian, on the other hand, holds its position as the lone form of communication bridging from Proto-Italian origin compared to its Western equivalent.
