The line graph illustrates the area of land deforested in Brazilian Amazon from 2008 to 2017, and the pie chart depicts the factors responsible for deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon for the same years.
The line graph shows that deforestation rate decreased over the years, while the pie chart describes the dominiance of agriculture as a causative factor compared to all.
According to the line graph, maximum area of deforestation took place in 2008 with just less than 35,000 square kilometers. Afterwards, the figure dropped with significant fluctuations to around 17,000 in 2012. Then, the area increased exponentially to around 30,000 before experiencing a significant drop of deforestation at a lowest point of approximately 5,000 square kilometers in 2016. From 2016 to 2017, a slight increase recorded to about 6,000 square kilometers, which was almost six times lower than 2008 area.
According to the pie chart, around one-third cause of deforestation was through smallholder agriculture, 35%, and one-fourth contributor, 25%, remained cattle pasture. Another two main categories were logging with 15% and large-scale agriculture with 20%. Merely 5% of causes were due to other activities.
